Announcement

We are excited to announce the successful formal pre-launch of GSSneareast: Network for Gender and Sexuality Studies in the Near East.

GSSneareast is a state-of-the-art website designed by and for researchers in Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies in the Near East. This new research and networking platform will promote accessible, innovative scholarship, and foster global interaction and cooperation among scholars and institutions engaged in women’s, gender, and sexuality studies across disciplinary lines in the Near East. The complete version of the website will launch, with all of the features and sections, in September 2023.

GSSneareast will feature geographic information system (GIS) mapping tools to create an interactive database of:

  1. Scholars in the field;

  2. WGSS programs, departments, and research centers across the Near East/World;

  3. Libraries and archives with collections relevant to the study of women, gender, and sexuality in the Near East;

  4. Non-profit organizations whose work and purpose relate to women, gender, and sexuality;

  5. Research projects, initiatives, and databases that focus on women’s, gender and sexuality studies in the Near East.

The platform will also feature essays, interviews, interdisciplinary scholarly exchanges, a book forum, a “how-to” series – discussing how to publish a book, submit a grant application, do archival research, find funding, etc. – to provide guidance for graduate students and junior faculty in the field of Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies who focus on the Near East, as well as a podcast and lecture series on issues related to gender and sexuality studies in the Near East. Most important, GSSneareast will organize an annual colloquium and a biennial workshop to bring forth new conversations and inter-disciplinary dialogue about improving our approaches in the future development of the field. Finally, GSSneareast will launch the “Bridges Forum” for registered users to exchange news and content on the most recent developments in the field.

The platform has two primary goals and purposes: firstly, it seeks to inspire new academic approaches by bridging the communication gap among scholars of different nationalities and from a variety of disciplinary backgrounds: including the humanities, the social sciences, and law; and secondly it seeks provide a space to discuss how to best use existing resources, such as collaboration among scholars, universities, research centers, and other institutions more effectively as an attempt to facilitate future growth and forms of cooperation in the field of gender and sexuality studies in the Near East.

GSSneareast is grounded firmly in the idea that gender, and sexuality studies needs to be a collaborative endeavor, and that conversation about our disciplines, approaches, and research will play a big role in moving scholarship forward. At the bottom of the home page, you will find the logos of the institutes which have endorsed the project thus far. We will keep on updating this page as GSSneareast receives more endorsements from institutions around the world. The logos of the institutions appear in alphabetical order on the website.
